CHAPTER 1 – THE STRATEGY PROCESS
CHAPTER LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this lecture, you will confidently be able to: • Define strategy using both the CIMA official definition and the Johnson, Scholes & Whittington definition • Explain the purpose and characteristics of strategic decisions in an organisational context • Identify and distinguish between the three levels of strategy: Corporate, Business and Functional • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of long-term formal strategic planning • Compare and contrast the four types/models of strategy: Rational, Emergent, Incremental, Freewheeling • Recommend the most appropriate strategy model for a given organisation and justify your recommendation • Explain the unique challenges of strategic planning in not-for-profit organisations using the 3 E's (Economy, Efficiency, Effectiveness) • Describe the three perspectives to strategic planning: Traditional, Market-led, Resource-based • Explain the role of the Strategic Management Accountant and how it differs from a traditional management accountant

CHAPTER 2 – Generating Strategic Options: Mission, Vision, Values and Stakeholders
Chapter Learning Objectives By the end of this session, you should be able to: 1. Explain what a mission is and why it matters to an organisation's strategy. 2. Critically evaluate the usefulness of a mission statement. 3. Distinguish between a mission statement and a vision statement. 4. Explain the role of organisational values and their impact on strategy and behaviour. 5. Define objectives and apply the SMART framework. 6. Identify and classify stakeholders using Mendelow's Power/Interest Matrix. 7. Recommend appropriate approaches for managing different stakeholder groups. 8. Discuss methods of resolving competing stakeholder objectives (Cyert & March). 9. Explain non-market strategy and corporate political activity (CPA).

CHAPTER 3 -THE ROLE OF GOVERNANCE AND ETHICS IN THE STRATEGY PROCESS
By the end of this session, you will confidently be able to: • Define corporate governance and explain why it matters for strategy • Identify and explain the key concepts of governance (fairness, transparency, integrity, etc.) • Discuss how governance impacts organisational strategy • Define and evaluate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) using Carroll's Model • Explain sustainability and how it fits into strategy • Understand the impact of technology on CSR • Apply the fundamental ethical principles of CIMA to real-life scenarios • Identify ethical threats and the appropriate safeguards
